Road Safety in Poland 2024: Government Report on Accidents and Actions.
The government has released its 2024 report on road safety in Poland. Unfortunately, the number of accidents and fatalities slightly increased compared to 2023. State efforts are focused on improving infrastructure, increasing police surveillance, and education, especially to protect pedestrians and cyclists.
Key points
In 2024, there were 21,519 accidents on Polish roads, resulting in 1,896 deaths and 24,782 injuries. This is a slight increase compared to the previous year.
Poland still has one of the higher fatality rates in the EU (52 deaths per million inhabitants), placing it above the EU average (44).
The main causes of accidents remain failure to adjust speed to road conditions and failure to yield the right of way.
The government is continuing investments in safer infrastructure, including building bypasses and modernizing pedestrian crossings, and expanding the speed camera system.
Numerous police operations are being conducted, including by 'SPEED' teams, along with educational campaigns targeting various groups, such as seniors ('Safe 60+').
Special attention is given to protecting pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, who constitute a significant portion of accident victims, especially in urban areas.
