Mandatory Religion or Ethics Classes in Schools and Kindergartens
This bill introduces mandatory religion or ethics classes, two hours per week, for students in kindergartens and schools (excluding adult schools). Parents or adult students will be required to choose at least one of these subjects, and the grade will count towards the average and promotion. The changes are set to take effect on September 1, 2025, and will incur increased costs for the state budget for ethics teacher positions.
Key points
All kindergartens and schools (except adult schools) will be required to organize mandatory religion or ethics classes, two hours per week.
Students must attend at least one of these subjects; the choice rests with parents or adult students and can be changed once a year.
Grades from religion or ethics will be included on the school certificate, count towards the grade average, and be considered for promotion to the next class.
Schools will be allowed to display crosses in premises and organize prayers before and after classes.
Additional state budget costs of approximately PLN 141.7 million annually are anticipated for increasing the number of ethics teacher positions.
