Safer tap water: new obligations for suppliers and building managers
New regulations introduce a risk-based control system for drinking water quality, from the source to the tap. The goal is to ensure water is clean and healthy, and to increase access for all residents.
Key points
A mandatory risk assessment for the entire water supply system, from the source to the distribution network, is introduced.
Building owners and managers (especially in hospitals, hotels, schools) must assess risks in internal plumbing, including for Legionella bacteria and lead.
Water suppliers must inform consumers about water quality and price, and in the case of large suppliers, also about water leakage levels.
Municipal authorities are tasked with identifying people with limited access to drinking water and taking action to help them.
Financial penalties are introduced for water suppliers and building managers for non-compliance with new obligations, such as water quality testing.
New requirements are introduced for the certification of materials in contact with water and the accreditation of laboratories testing its quality.
