NFZ 2024 Report: More money for healthcare, but specialist queues remain long.

In 2024, the National Health Fund (NFZ) allocated significantly more money for Poles' medical treatment, including for GP visits, specialist appointments, and hospital stays. Despite higher spending, waiting times for some specialists, such as endocrinologists and gastroenterologists, still extend for many months.
Key points
Healthcare spending increased in 2024 by over ten percent compared to the previous year, including for hospital treatment (+16.7%) and specialist visits (+15.9%).
The longest waits are for appointments with an endocrinologist (average 194 days), a gastroenterologist (190 days), and a cardiologist (109 days). Long queues also affect rehabilitation (even over 200 days).
The number of Poles receiving treatment abroad at the NFZ's expense has increased. The Fund reimbursed costs for over 13,600 applications (a 10% increase), mainly for cataract surgeries.
The most money within drug programs was spent on treating breast cancer (PLN 1.43 billion), lung cancer (PLN 1.36 billion), and multiple sclerosis (PLN 828 million).
At the end of 2024, 36.6 million people in Poland had the right to free healthcare.
NFZ audits in 2024 resulted in PLN 136.8 million in savings, including the recovery of PLN 58.1 million in improperly paid funds and the imposition of PLN 76.6 million in fines.
