New Road Rules: Driver Licenses, Child Safety, and Professional Transport
This law introduces significant changes to road traffic regulations, impacting child safety, young drivers' qualifications, and professional transport rules. Citizens should be aware of new helmet requirements and altered conditions for obtaining and maintaining a driving license.
Key points
Mandatory Helmets for Children: Children under 16 on bicycles, e-scooters, and personal transport devices must wear helmets. Children up to 7 years old transported on bicycles must also wear helmets and be in safe seats.
Category B Driving License from Age 17: It's now possible to obtain a Category B driving license at 17, but with restrictions: driving only in Poland until age 18, and for 6 months with an adult supervisor (min. 25 years old, 5 years Cat B license, no bans, sober).
Probationary Period for New Drivers: An extended probationary period (2 or 3 years) with zero tolerance for alcohol/drugs. Exceeding 12 penalty points or committing two serious traffic offenses requires mandatory road hazard training or extends the probationary period.
Point Reduction Courses: Drivers can take a paid, non-remote training course (once every 6 months) to reduce 6 penalty points, except during the first year of holding a driving license.
Professional Drivers: Lowering the age for certain driving license categories (D, D+E, D1, D1+E) to 18 or 20 for domestic transport, provided specific qualifications are met.
Passenger Sobriety Checks: Police can demand alcohol or drug tests from supervising passengers of young drivers if there is reasonable suspicion.
Increased Speed Limit for Tractors: The speed limit for agricultural tractors is increased from 30 km/h to 40 km/h.
Health Declaration: Obligation to complete a health declaration under penalty of perjury when undergoing medical examinations for a driving license.
