Greater Control Over Online Content: New Rights and Obligations
The act implements EU digital services regulations, giving citizens new tools to combat illegal online content. It will be easier to report harmful materials and appeal platforms' decisions to remove posts or block accounts.
Key points
You can file a request with a public authority to block illegal online content, such as scams or hate speech.
If a platform (e.g., a social media site) removes your post or blocks your account, you can appeal this decision to a public authority.
Designated authorities (President of UKE, President of UOKiK, Chairman of KRRiT) will supervise online platforms and search engines.
A special register of websites with illegal content will be created, which internet providers will be required to block access to.
Online platforms that fail to comply with the new rules may face high financial penalties, up to 6% of their global turnover.
Researchers and trusted organizations will gain special rights to report illegal content and study online risks.
