Enhanced product safety: new inspection rules and higher penalties
A new law strengthens consumer protection against dangerous products, especially those purchased online. It introduces more effective inspection tools for authorities and gives every citizen the right to report a suspicious item.
Key points
The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) and the Trade Inspection Authority gain new powers to inspect product safety.
Anyone can report a product they consider dangerous to UOKiK, and their identity as the reporter will be protected.
Special rules for inspecting online sales are introduced, including the ability for inspectors to make anonymous test purchases.
UOKiK can order providers of online marketplaces to remove listings for dangerous products.
Placing a dangerous product on the market is subject to high financial penalties, reaching up to PLN 1 million.
Customs authorities will cooperate more closely with the inspection to prevent dangerous goods from outside the European Union from entering the market.
The Minister competent for health will run a system to monitor consumer accidents.
