Road traffic changes: new powers for emergency services and drivers

The law expands the powers of firefighters, water and mountain rescuers to direct traffic and use signals. It also introduces changes to driving license issuance, including temporary electronic licenses, and exempts permits for emergency vehicles of volunteer fire brigades and rescuers from fees.
Key points
Firefighters (State and Volunteer) and water/mountain rescuers will gain the right to direct traffic during rescue operations.
Volunteer firefighters will need to complete a traffic control course, unless they already have instructor or examiner qualifications.
Permits to drive emergency vehicles for volunteer fire brigades, water and mountain rescuers will be issued free of charge.
Young drivers who passed their exam before reaching the minimum age will be able to obtain a temporary electronic driving license earlier.
Re-education courses for drivers will no longer be allowed online – only in-person.
