Government Report 2024: Pregnancy Care, Family Support, and Abortion in Poland.
The government has summarized its 2024 actions regarding healthcare for pregnant women, financial support for families, and access to legal pregnancy termination. The document presents data on social programs like "Family 800+" and "Active Parent," as well as key changes in access to prenatal testing and emergency contraception.
Key points
Financial support for families: The government continued the "Family 800+" program (PLN 66.2 billion in 2024), introduced the "Active Parent" program (up to PLN 1900 per month), and provided free medication for pregnant and postpartum women under the "Pregnancy Plus" program.
Better access to testing and contraception: The age criterion (35 years) for free prenatal testing was abolished, making it available to all pregnant women. A pilot program for the "morning-after pill" was also launched, available in pharmacies with a pharmacist's prescription for individuals over 15.
Perinatal care and anesthesia: A system of financial bonuses for hospitals was introduced to increase the availability of epidural anesthesia during childbirth. In 2024, the rate of births with anesthesia (excluding C-sections) rose to 22%.
Legal pregnancy termination: In 2024, 885 legal abortion procedures were performed in Poland. The main reason (882 cases) was a threat to the woman's life or health. The government took steps to ensure hospitals with national health fund contracts provide these services.
Decline in births: The report indicates a deepening demographic crisis. In 2024, the lowest number of births in the post-war period was recorded (approx. 252,000), and the fertility rate dropped to 1.099.
