National Council of the Judiciary Reforms: Judges Elect Members, Increased Transparency
This law changes how judges are selected for the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS), introducing direct elections by judges themselves instead of parliamentary selection. It also establishes a Social Council at the KRS and increases the transparency of its meetings and documents. The aim is to enhance the judiciary's influence on the KRS's composition and the openness of its operations.
Key points
Judges for the National Council of the Judiciary will now be directly elected by other judges in a secret ballot, not by the Parliament.
A Social Council will be established at the KRS, comprising representatives from various legal professions and organizations, to provide opinions on important matters.
National Council of the Judiciary meetings will be public, with protocols, stenograms, and recordings made publicly available in the Public Information Bulletin.
Judges appointed to judicial positions as a result of a motion from the previous National Council of the Judiciary (selected by Parliament) will not be eligible to run in the first new elections.
Current members of the National Council of the Judiciary, elected by the Parliament, will cease their activity upon the announcement of the new election results.
