International corruption cases to be handled by district courts

New regulations move the most serious corruption cases involving foreign officials from regional to district courts. The change aims to ensure these complex cases are handled by more experienced judges, in line with international recommendations.
Key points
Cases concerning bribing foreign public officials or their acceptance of bribes will now be heard in the first instance by district courts, instead of regional courts as before.
The change is a response to recommendations from the international Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to strengthen the fight against bribery in international trade.
The new rules apply only to a narrow group of the most serious international corruption offenses; they do not change how typical domestic corruption cases are handled.
Proceedings that began before this law came into force will continue under the old rules to avoid delays and organizational chaos.
