Enhanced Support for Kashubian and Wilamowicean Languages in Poland

This new law strengthens the status of the Wilamowicean language, officially recognizing it alongside Kashubian as a regional language. This means more opportunities for learning these languages in schools, greater media presence, and better representation of their communities in government advisory bodies. Citizens speaking these languages will thus have improved conditions for preserving their culture and identity.
Key points
The Wilamowicean language has been officially recognized as a regional language, alongside Kashubian.
Communities speaking Wilamowicean and Kashubian will have greater influence on decisions concerning their culture, through increased representation in the Joint Commission of the Government and National and Ethnic Minorities.
Starting from the 2026/2027 school year, applications for learning the Wilamowicean language in schools can be submitted.
Public media (radio and television) will be obliged to consider the needs of communities speaking regional languages, including broadcasting news programs in these languages.
The Ministry of Education will promote knowledge about the history, culture, and languages of national and ethnic minorities, as well as regional languages.
