Road Safety in Poland 2023: Report on Accidents, Costs, and Preventive Actions.
In 2023, Polish roads saw a slight decrease in the number of accidents and fatalities, but the number of seriously injured people increased. The report indicates that the main causes of tragedies remain excessive speed and driving under the influence, with the social costs of road incidents amounting to tens of billions of zlotys annually.
Key points
In 2023, 1,893 people died in 20,936 accidents. Although this is slightly less than the previous year, the number of seriously injured people increased by 0.7%.
The social cost of all road accidents and collisions in 2022 amounted to a staggering 52 billion PLN, which was 1.75% of Poland's GDP.
The main cause of fatal accidents caused by drivers is inappropriate speed. The most vulnerable groups are pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and people over 60.
The number of fatalities in accidents caused by drunk drivers increased by over 23% compared to 2022.
In response to the threats, numerous actions are being taken, including educational campaigns (e.g., for seniors), increased police checks in dangerous areas, and investments in safer road infrastructure.
