NBP 2023 Report: Fighting Inflation and the Central Bank's Finances

The National Bank of Poland summarized 2023, a year focused on lowering high inflation. Thanks to previous interest rate hikes and their maintenance, followed by cuts in the autumn, inflation fell from over 18% to 6.2% by year-end. The bank itself recorded a financial loss of PLN 20.8 billion, mainly due to the strengthening of the zloty, which does not affect its ability to perform its tasks.
Key points
Inflation dropped from 18.4% in February to 6.2% in December 2023, reaching the NBP's target level (2.5%) in early 2024.
After a long period of keeping interest rates at 6.75%, the Monetary Policy Council cut them to 5.75% in September and October, impacting the cost of loans and deposits.
The NBP recorded a financial loss of PLN 20.8 billion, mainly caused by the strengthening of the zloty, which is an accounting event and does not threaten the state's financial stability.
The NBP's gold reserves increased by 130 tons, reaching 358.7 tons, which constitutes 12.3% of the country's official reserve assets.
The value of cash in circulation increased by 2.4% to PLN 377.5 billion, the lowest increase since 2012.
