Mandatory Microchipping, Registration, and Free Spay/Neuter for Dogs and Cats.
A new law introduces mandatory microchipping and registration for dogs and cats to prevent homelessness. Owners will not bear the costs of these procedures or spay/neuter surgeries, as they will be financed by municipalities with state subsidies. The goal is to improve animal welfare and reduce the number of homeless animals.
Key points
Dog and cat owners must microchip and register their animals within 30 days of reaching 3 months of age or acquisition.
Microchipping, registration, and voluntary spay/neuter procedures are free for owners, with costs covered by municipalities from state funds.
Fines ranging from 100 to 1000 PLN will be imposed for failing to microchip, register, or update animal data.
A Central Register of Dogs and Cats will be established to collect data from existing databases, facilitating the identification of lost animals.
The law comes into effect on January 1, 2025, with a three-month grace period for animals already owned.
