New Rules for Penalties for Non-Cooperation with US Congress

The U.S. House of Representatives is implementing new rules to make it easier for committees to obtain information and testimony from government officials and others. Individuals who fail to comply with requests may face fines up to $100,000, which cannot be paid with government funds or by third parties.
Key points
House committees can now more easily request documents and testimony from officials and other individuals.
If cooperation is lacking or objections are unresolved, the committee can issue a formal demand (subpoena).
Individuals who do not comply with a subpoena can be found in 'contempt' of Congress and fined.
The maximum fine for non-compliance is $100,000.
Fines cannot be paid using public money or by other individuals or organizations.
