This act aims to provide financial support to families of elementary and secondary school staff members killed in acts of violence while performing their duties. It includes one-time benefits, living allowances, and educational assistance for dependent children. Funding for this program will come from a dedicated trust fund, partly financed by an increased excise tax on ammunition.
Key points
Families of deceased school staff will receive a death benefit of $325,000 and up to $1,500 for funeral expenses.
Surviving spouses or dependent children under 18 will receive a monthly living allowance of $900.
Dependent children of victims will be eligible for undergraduate education assistance for up to 5 years, covering tuition and fees.
Benefits received under this act and the victim's wages in the year of death will be excluded from gross income for tax purposes.
A dedicated trust fund, partly financed by an increased excise tax on ammunition, will be established to fund these benefits.
