More COVID-19 Data in Prisons: Transparency and Safety

This act aims to increase transparency of COVID-19 data in federal, state, and local correctional facilities. It will provide citizens with access to information on tests, infections, hospitalizations, and deaths among inmates and staff, allowing for a better assessment of the health situation in these facilities. The act is intended to help monitor the spread of the virus and the effectiveness of preventive measures in confined communities.
Key points
Federal, state, and local correctional facilities will be required to report COVID-19 data daily or weekly, including the number of tests, positive and negative results, hospitalizations, recoveries, and deaths, for both incarcerated persons and staff.
Data will be publicly available on the websites of the Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The act also requires the collection of vaccination data, including the number of vaccinated individuals, vaccination policies, and reasons for vaccine refusal.
States that fail to comply with the requirements may face a 10% reduction in certain federal crime control grants.
All collected data will be anonymized to protect individual privacy and will be used solely for public health purposes.
