Improved Veteran Healthcare: Wider Access and Extended Hours

This act expands options for veterans with significant disabilities to receive medical care outside Department of Veterans Affairs facilities. Additionally, VA pharmacies and medical centers will operate longer, including weekends and holidays, making it easier to access medications and services. Independent quality reviews are also planned.
Key points
Veterans with a 50% or higher service-connected disability can choose care from non-Department providers.
VA pharmacies will be open on weekends, holidays, and until 8:00 p.m. on weekdays.
VA medical facilities will contract with doctors and nurses for night and weekend shifts.
Independent best-practices peer reviews of VA medical centers may be conducted, prioritizing those with long wait times or poor health outcomes.
