Duty to Report Foreign Influence in Election Campaigns

New rules require political committees and campaign-related individuals to report financial offers from foreign nationals and meetings with foreign governments. This aims to protect election integrity and limit foreign influence in U.S. politics. Failure to report such information can lead to penalties.
Key points
Political committees and candidates must report offers of prohibited contributions from foreign nationals to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the FBI within 24 hours.
Meetings with foreign governments or their agents must be reported to the FEC within 24 hours, with an exception for official meetings by elected officials.
Failure to report such offers or meetings can result in fines or imprisonment up to 2 years.
Information reported under this act cannot be used for the purpose of deporting undocumented aliens.
