Congress Members: Voluntary Opt-Out from FERS Pension System

This act allows Members of Congress to voluntarily opt out of the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). At the same time, these individuals will still be able to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). These changes primarily affect future Members of Congress who begin service after the act's enactment, but also those who previously opted out of FERS.
Key points
Members of Congress can choose not to participate in the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS).
Even if they opt out of FERS, Members of Congress can still contribute to the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).
