Methane Waste Prevention Act: Cleaner Air and Reduced Gas Loss

This act aims to significantly reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, contributing to improved air quality and climate change efforts. It introduces new rules for companies to limit leaks and gas flaring, and increases transparency of emissions data. Citizens may benefit from a cleaner environment and potentially more efficient use of natural resources.
Key points
The act targets a 65% reduction in methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 2025 and 90% by 2030, compared to 2012 levels.
It mandates oil and gas companies to capture at least 85% of produced gas within one year of enactment, and 99% within five years.
Prohibits intentional venting and flaring of gas from new and re-fractured production wells two years after the act's enactment.
Requires companies to conduct regular inspections for methane leaks and promptly repair them, along with public reporting of emissions data.
Reinstates previous regulations on gas waste prevention that were previously repealed.
