Expanding Medigap Coverage for Individuals with Kidney Disease

This law ensures individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) have guaranteed access to supplemental health insurance (Medigap), regardless of age. It also extends the period during which their private insurance pays first, potentially reducing out-of-pocket costs.
Key points
Individuals with ESRD are now guaranteed the ability to purchase Medigap policies, which help cover costs not paid by Medicare.
The period during which private insurance pays for ESRD treatment before Medicare has been extended from 12 to 42 months.
A one-time enrollment period (January 1 to June 30, 2022) is established for eligible individuals with ESRD to enroll in any Medigap policy.
