Transfer of Cherokee Historic Lands to Tribal Trust

This act transfers certain federal lands in Tennessee, including historic sites, into trust for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The purpose is to preserve and commemorate Cherokee culture and history, and to develop related educational and recreational programs. Citizens should be aware that gambling activities will not be permitted on these lands.
Key points
Historic lands and memorial sites, such as Sequoyah Museum, Chota Memorial, and Tanasi Memorial, are transferred to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
These lands will be primarily used for memorializing Indian history and culture, as well as for recreational and educational purposes.
All forms of gambling are prohibited on the transferred lands.
Federal authorities (Tennessee Valley Authority) retain certain rights, such as the ability to temporarily flood parts of the lands or manage water levels in Tellico Reservoir, which may affect access to some areas.
