Protecting Americans from Dangerous Algorithms: Online Platform Accountability

This act aims to increase the accountability of large online platforms for content promoted by their algorithms if it leads to harm. It means platforms could face legal responsibility for content they actively amplify that is harmful. These changes do not apply to small businesses or basic internet infrastructure, nor to content displayed transparently or directly searched for by users.
Key points
Online platforms may lose legal protection if their algorithms promote harmful content.
Changes apply to algorithms that actively amplify, rank, or recommend information.
Exceptions include small businesses (up to 10 million users), basic internet infrastructure, and content displayed chronologically, alphabetically, randomly, or searched by the user.
