Joint Student Loan Separation: New Options for Married Couples.

This act allows married couples who took out a joint student loan before 2006 to separate it. This means each spouse will only be responsible for their portion of the debt, which can simplify financial management, especially after divorce or in cases of domestic violence.
Key points
Ability to separate joint student loans taken out before June 30, 2006.
Each spouse will receive a separate loan with their own portion of the debt and the same interest rate.
The individual separating the loan will not be responsible for the other spouse's portion of the debt.
Payments previously made on the joint loan will be credited towards the new, separate loan.
Option to apply individually in cases of domestic violence, economic abuse, or difficulty contacting the other spouse.
