Expanded Family Leave: Care for Relatives and School Activities

This act broadens the right to family and medical leave, allowing employees to care for a wider range of family members, including domestic partners, in-laws, adult children, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, and other close individuals. It also introduces a new type of leave for participating in children's and grandchildren's educational and extracurricular activities, as well as for routine medical appointments and elder care.
Key points
Ability to take leave to care for a domestic partner, in-laws, adult children, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, and other individuals with whom the employee has a close family-like bond.
Introduction of additional leave (up to 24 hours annually, maximum 4 hours every 30 days) for participating in children's and grandchildren's school and extracurricular activities.
Additional leave for routine medical appointments (employee's, children's, spouse's, grandchildren's) and elder care, including nursing home visits.
Federal employees also gain these same expanded family and medical leave rights.
