Expanding 529 Plans: Funding for Technical Training and Apprenticeships

This act allows funds from 529 savings plans, previously mainly for college, to be used for technical training and apprenticeship programs. This gives citizens more flexibility in financing their education, potentially making it easier to acquire new skills and enter the workforce.
Key points
529 plan funds can now be used for fees, books, tools, and equipment required for approved apprenticeship programs.
These funds can also cover costs for training leading to recognized postsecondary credentials, including testing fees.
The changes apply to expenses paid or incurred after the act's enactment date, for programs beginning after that date.
