Shark Fin Sales Ban: Protecting Marine Environment

New law prohibits the sale, possession, and purchase of shark fins in the U.S. to protect sharks. Exceptions exist for scientific, educational, and certain traditional fishing purposes. The act aims to reduce demand for shark fins and support shark conservation.
Key points
Total ban on the sale and purchase of shark fins and products containing them in the U.S.
Exceptions to the ban include fins used for research, education, display, and non-commercial subsistence in traditional communities.
The act does not apply to fins from smooth dogfish (Mustelus canis) and spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), allowing their continued trade.
Requires the inclusion of rays and skates in the seafood traceability program, increasing transparency of these products' origin.
