Easier Access to Benefits for Individuals with Criminal Records

This act repeals the federal ban on social and food assistance for individuals with drug-related convictions. Additionally, individuals scheduled for release from incarceration within 30 days will be eligible for food assistance, aiming to ease their reintegration into society and ensure basic needs are met.
Key points
Individuals with drug-related convictions can now apply for federal social (TANF) and food (SNAP) benefits.
Incarcerated individuals scheduled for release within 30 days can apply for food assistance (SNAP) before leaving prison.
State laws that restricted access to these benefits due to drug-related pasts are no longer valid.
