Road Safety: New Technologies and Protection for First Responders
This act aims to enhance road safety by introducing new vehicle technologies and improving protection for first responders and others stopped on the roadside. Citizens can expect safer roads due to collision avoidance systems in new cars and better visibility and protection for roadside workers and emergency services.
Key points
New cars sold in the U.S. will be required to have forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and blind zone detection systems.
Educational programs and digital alert technologies (e.g., alerts for drivers) will be implemented to improve compliance with 'Move Over' laws for emergency and other stopped vehicles.
Federal agencies will be required to equip their new vehicles with these same collision avoidance technologies and digital alert technology for emergency vehicles and alert reception for all fleet vehicles.
States may receive grants for activities to prevent crashes involving vehicles and individuals stopped at the roadside, including technology purchases, public information campaigns, and law enforcement.
