This act aims to provide free breakfasts and lunches for all children attending schools. It also introduces a summer food benefits program, prohibits "meal shaming" practices, and addresses reimbursement for school meal debts.
Key points
All children in schools participating in breakfast and lunch programs will receive meals for free, regardless of family income.
Schools will be prohibited from collecting unpaid meal debts from parents or shaming children for such debts.
A Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program will be established for lower-income families to ensure children have access to food outside the school year.
Schools will receive additional payments for meals prepared with locally-sourced farm products, supporting local farmers.
Nutrition programs for children in child and adult care facilities and afterschool programs will also offer free meals and supplements.
