Protecting Family Tax Refunds from Student Loan Debt Seizures

This bill aims to protect portions of tax refunds, specifically the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit, from being seized to cover student loan debts. This means families receiving these credits will be able to keep more of their refunds, even if they have outstanding student loan obligations. These changes apply to tax refunds for tax years beginning after December 31, 2020.
Key points
Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit refunds will be protected from seizure for student loan debt.
Individuals with student loan debt who qualify for these credits will receive a larger portion of their tax refund.
The changes are effective for tax refunds for years starting from 2021 onwards.
