Safe Drinking Water: New Rules for System Flushing and Alternative Water Supply

New regulations aim to ensure safer drinking water by mandating flushing of water systems when water is contaminated or stagnant for too long. If water quality issues arise, suppliers must provide alternative water, and if they fail, the government can do so at their expense. Importantly, suppliers cannot raise customer fees to cover these costs.
Key points
Mandatory flushing of water distribution systems if water is contaminated or stagnant for over 6 months.
Authorities can order alternative water supplies if drinking water is unsafe.
If a supplier fails to provide alternative water, the government can do so and charge the supplier double the cost.
Water suppliers are prohibited from increasing customer fees to cover costs related to providing alternative water.
