Easier Access to Post-Hospital Care for Seniors

This act makes it easier for Medicare beneficiaries to access skilled nursing facility care. It counts time spent under hospital observation towards the required three-day inpatient stay, which was previously a barrier for many patients. This change will allow more people to receive necessary post-hospital care.
Key points
Time spent in hospital observation will now count towards the required three-day inpatient stay for Medicare skilled nursing facility (SNF) coverage.
This change applies to observation services from January 1, 2021, and allows appeals for services completed before the act's enactment if filed within 90 days.
