Support for Teachers of English Language Learners
This act aims to improve the quality of education for students whose native language is not English. It provides grants to higher education institutions to better prepare future teachers to work with these students. This will give these children a greater chance of success in school and achieving English proficiency.
Key points
Higher education institutions will receive grants to develop or strengthen teacher preparation programs specializing in teaching English as a second language.
These programs will teach educators how to help students achieve high academic levels, gain English proficiency, and recognize and address their social and emotional needs.
Preference will be given to partnerships recruiting teacher candidates from underrepresented populations or former English learners.
The act seeks to increase the number of well-prepared teachers, leading to better educational support for English language learners.
