Ending Concurrent Unemployment Benefits and Social Security Disability Payments

New rules aim to prevent individuals from simultaneously receiving unemployment benefits and Social Security disability insurance. If you receive unemployment benefits, it may be considered substantial gainful activity, potentially disqualifying you from disability payments. These changes apply to those who apply for disability benefits and receive unemployment compensation on or after January 1, 2022.
Key points
Receiving unemployment benefits will be considered substantial gainful activity, potentially making individuals ineligible for disability insurance.
The changes cover regular, extended, and additional unemployment compensation, as well as trade readjustment allowances.
New rules take effect on January 1, 2022, for new disability benefit applications and unemployment compensation received on or after this date.
The Social Security Administration will use electronic data matching to enforce these provisions.
