Immigration Changes: Nuclear Family Priority and Reductions

This bill modifies family-sponsored immigration rules, prioritizing spouses and children of permanent residents. It significantly reduces the total number of family visas available and introduces a new non-immigrant visa for parents of U.S. citizens, but without work authorization or public benefits. U.S. citizens will be responsible for their parents' financial support under this new category.
Key points
The definition of "immediate relative" for immigration purposes will be narrowed to include only spouses and children, excluding parents of U.S. citizens.
The overall number of family-sponsored immigrant visas will be substantially reduced to 88,000 annually.
A new non-immigrant visa category will be created for parents of U.S. citizens (aged 21 or older), but these parents will not be allowed to work or receive public benefits. The U.S. citizen child must provide health insurance and financial support.
Petitions for family-sponsored immigrant categories eliminated by this act, filed after its introduction date, will be invalid.
