Equal Access to Allergy Testing in Medicare and Medicaid Programs

This act ensures that two main types of allergy tests – blood tests (IgE) and skin prick tests – will be covered equally under Medicare and Medicaid programs. This means patients will have equal access to both methods for diagnosing allergies, potentially improving treatment quality and reducing costs. The changes take effect from January 1, 2022.
Key points
Equal coverage for allergy tests: Medicare and Medicaid will cover both blood (IgE) and skin prick tests equally.
Improved diagnosis and treatment: Easier access to both test types aims to lead to better allergy diagnosis and more effective treatment.
Reduced costs and disparities: The goal is to lower healthcare costs and reduce inequalities in access to medical services.
Effective January 1, 2022: New rules for allergy test coverage will apply starting early 2022.
