Congressional Physician Independence: New Appointment and Oversight Rules

This act changes how the Attending Physician, responsible for healthcare for Congress members and staff, is appointed and overseen. The goal is to increase the independence of this role and ensure better accountability. For citizens, this means that those responsible for the health of their representatives will be chosen in a more transparent manner.
Key points
The Attending Physician will be appointed by the President for a 10-year term, with Senate approval, from candidates recommended by a special commission.
The recommending commission will consist of 15 members, including congressional leaders and chairs of key committees, as well as the Marshal of the Supreme Court.
At least three recommended candidates must be medical officers of the U.S. Navy.
The Office of Attending Physician will be subject to oversight by two key congressional committees, increasing transparency and accountability.
