Easier Access to Comprehensive Care for Seriously Ill Children via Medicaid
This act gives states the option to more easily offer comprehensive, coordinated medical care and support for children under 21 with serious, life-threatening conditions under Medicaid. This program, called ChiPACC, aims to improve the quality of life for children and their families from the time of diagnosis, including palliative care, counseling, and family support, regardless of life expectancy prognosis.
Key points
States can now more easily include the ChiPACC program in their Medicaid plans, bypassing a lengthy waiver process.
The ChiPACC program provides coordinated medical, palliative, and support services for children with serious illnesses from diagnosis, not just in the final months of life.
Care includes support for the entire family, including counseling and bereavement services.
The program has the potential to reduce healthcare costs for states by promoting home-based care over hospital stays.
