Banning Harmful Chemicals in Food Contact Materials

This bill aims to ban the use of harmful chemicals called ortho-phthalates in materials used for food production and packaging. These changes are intended to protect citizens' health, especially children and pregnant women, from potentially dangerous substances that can leach into food.
Key points
Starting two years after the law is enacted, ortho-phthalates will be prohibited in materials that come into contact with food, such as packaging or production equipment.
Any existing rules allowing the use of these chemicals in food will become invalid.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must review other products it regulates for the presence of ortho-phthalates and publish a report on its findings.
