New Fuels and Cars: Higher Octane and Ethanol

This law changes fuel and car standards starting in 2026. New vehicles will be designed to use higher octane fuels with more ethanol, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. Larger gas stations will be required to offer higher octane fuels.
Key points
Starting in 2026, new cars will be designed for 95+ octane fuel with up to 25% ethanol, and from 2031, for 98+ octane with up to 30% ethanol.
Larger gas stations will be required to sell 95+ octane fuel (from 2025) and 98+ octane fuel (from 2030).
New rules aim to improve vehicle fuel efficiency and reduce pollution.
Tax credit for alternative fuel refueling property (including minimum 20% ethanol/biodiesel blends) is extended through 2027.
