New Rules on Violence During Labor Disputes

This law changes federal rules to allow serious acts of violence or threats during labor disputes to be prosecuted at the federal level. Minor incidents during peaceful protests will still be handled by state and local authorities. The goal is to increase accountability for violent acts affecting commerce.
Key points
Serious violence, threats, or extortion affecting commerce during labor disputes can now be prosecuted under federal law.
These actions can result in high fines (up to $100,000) and long prison sentences (up to 20 years).
Minor property damage or minor bodily injury that is incidental and not part of a pattern of violence during peaceful picketing remains under state and local authority.
