Easier Access to Medical Foods and Insurance Coverage

This act aims to improve access to specialized medical foods for individuals with specific health conditions. It redefines medical food and mandates its coverage under federal health programs like Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and TRICARE, as well as private health insurance. This will provide citizens with greater financial support for essential nutritional products.
Key points
Broadening the definition of medical food to include products for patients who have failed traditional therapies or for whom such therapies are inappropriate.
Enabling medical foods to receive a National Drug Code (NDC) number, simplifying identification and billing.
Ensuring coverage for medically necessary food under Medicare (Parts B and D), Medicaid, CHIP, and TRICARE, reducing financial burdens on patients.
Requiring private health insurance plans to also cover medically necessary food, increasing access to treatment for many individuals.
