Support for ALS Veterans' Widows: New Benefit Rules

This act makes it easier for surviving spouses of veterans who died from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) to receive increased benefits. The changes mean that the duration of the veteran's illness before death will no longer affect benefit eligibility, potentially providing financial relief to many families.
Key points
Surviving spouses of veterans who died from ALS can receive increased benefits, regardless of how long the veteran had the disease.
To be eligible, the surviving spouse must have been married to the veteran for at least eight continuous years.
These new rules apply to veteran deaths from ALS occurring on or after October 1, 2021.
