Prohibiting Gun Sales to Individuals Convicted of Violent Misdemeanors

New rules aim to restrict access to firearms and ammunition for individuals convicted of certain violent misdemeanors. This means if someone has committed such an offense within the last five years, they will be legally barred from purchasing a gun. These changes are intended to enhance public safety by making it harder for individuals with a history of violence to acquire firearms.
Key points
Individuals convicted of a "violent misdemeanor" within the last 5 years will be prohibited from buying firearms or ammunition.
A "violent misdemeanor" includes offenses involving the use, attempted use, or threatened use of physical force or a deadly weapon, or knowingly causing physical injury.
The prohibition does not apply to convictions occurring before 6 months after the law's enactment and does not alter other existing gun prohibition rules.
Exceptions apply if the conviction has been expunged, set aside, or the person has been pardoned or had civil rights restored, unless the pardon explicitly prohibits firearm possession.
