Student Loan Borrower Support: New Repayment Rules and Assistance
This act aims to protect federal student loan borrowers as the COVID-19 payment pause ends. It introduces new rules for notifying borrowers about payment resumption, simplifies access to income-driven repayment plans, and offers additional support for those facing financial hardship to prevent defaults.
Key points
You will receive at least 6 notifications about your student loan payments resuming, including information on available income-driven repayment options.
Borrowers who struggled with payments before the pandemic will receive priority and additional notifications and support.
For one year after payments resume, you can more easily switch to an income-driven repayment plan by self-certifying your income and family size.
If you face economic hardship, you can apply for a one-year payment deferment, and lenders will inform you about this option.
If you miss payments for 60 days, your loan will automatically be placed in administrative forbearance for 90 days, and you will receive additional outreach.
