No Surprise Bills for COVID-19 Tests Act

This act aims to prevent citizens from receiving unexpected high bills for COVID-19 tests and related services. It extends free test coverage until the end of 2023 and introduces rules to protect against surprise charges, especially when tests are performed by out-of-network providers.
Key points
Free COVID-19 tests will be covered until December 31, 2023, meaning insurers must continue to pay for them.
Starting May 1, 2022, if you get a COVID-19 test from a provider not in your insurance network, rules protecting against surprise bills will apply, similar to emergency services.
These rules do not apply to over-the-counter home COVID-19 tests, which may still be covered under separate guidance.
Federal and state agencies can quickly implement these changes to ensure smooth operation.
