Ban on Confining Pigs in Gestation Stalls: Improved Animal Welfare

This act introduces new rules for pig farming, prohibiting the confinement of pregnant pigs in overly small stalls. It aims to improve animal welfare and may affect the availability and prices of pork products, as producers will need to adapt their farming methods.
Key points
Starting December 31, 2022, it will be unlawful to confine pregnant pigs in stalls that prevent them from freely turning around, standing up, or lying down.
Each breeding pig must have at least 24 square feet of usable floorspace.
Exceptions to the ban include transportation, veterinary procedures, the five-day period before farrowing, and slaughter.
Financial assistance will be available to pig producers to help them comply with the new requirements, with priority given to independent producers.
State and local animal welfare laws that are identical to or more stringent than this act remain in effect.
